You just watched a thoroughly enjoyable and expertly directed film. You want to check out what other people think of it. You go to Rottentomatoes, IMDb or Metacritic to read some reviews… and you realize that you are alone. So very, very alone. You know the feeling? I do, after watching the perversely underrated After Earth.

I am not saying this film is as brilliant as the earliest films of Shyamalan. What I am saying is that I thought it was the best popcorn-flick to come out of Hollywood this year. Nasha sharab mein hota to nachti botal lyrics. Brilliantly directed, beautifully if uncharacteristically paced, well acted (Will was great, Jaden was passable), intimate and elegant. That is what I think of After Earth.

M Night Shyamalan is one of the best things Hollywood has to offer, I stand by that. Not because I am a fan-boy. But because time and time again his movies (with some exceptions) put me under their spell. I’m not even that big on Hollywood movies. I love Haneke, Dumont, Bergman, Fellini, Kurosawa, Ozu, etc… you know: art-house stuff. Once in a while though, I like to just watch some brainless entertainment. More often than not, I am shocked by the mindnumbingness of most of those movies. I’ve almost never had a bad experience with M. Nights films though.

Let’s recap:

– The Sixth Sense (A masterpiece in the ghost story genre).

– Unbreakable (Tarantino called it a masterpiece in one of his favorite movies lists. I agree with him).

– Signs (An enjoyable and highly original variant on the invasion genre. I love you Nostalghia Critic, but I do not agree with your hilarious review)

– The Village (according to me, this is his 3rd masterpiece. Original, atmospheric, moving).

– Lady in the water (A more than average fantasy flick. Highly original).

– The Happening (Everybody hated it. I didn’t, even though I felt Mark Wahlberg was miscast. There was something indefinably eerie about the wind blowing in those treetops).

– The Last Airbender (oh well… nobody’s perfect)

– After Earth (It’s just my opinion, but I thought it was better than Oblivion, Iron Man 3, Man Of steel, Star Trek: Into Darkness, and Pacific Rim. And I liked all of those movies!).

I would give this movie an 8 out of 10 if the reviews weren’t so absurdly malicious. I’ll crank it up to 10 out of 10 to help out the average score.

After Earth 1080p,

Just seen what people have been rating this film id i would like to defend it slightly, overall it was a good concept and base of a story but could already do with being “rebooted” if only to expand and fill the massive amounts of plot holes

The idea of us leaving the planet only to crash land and have to survive 1000 years later was good and also how nature had basically reclaimed the planet but everything evolved to kill humans… But how when there were no humans anyway, hey did show that animals had mass produced and that in 1000 years buffalo, baboons and tigers still existed

Will smith may have been a lead but 90% of the film of him sat bossing his son around as he has broke both legs where as his real life teenage son plays a “i know better than you” teenage son

I would love to see this remade really soon and have the gaps and back story filled, have just found out that there is a ‘bible’ but over here the only thing i had seen of this was the trailer on TV

I would recommend seeing this as it does make a good film in the end, despite everyone else’s review and true sci-fi fans do watch the bad with the good Nokia x2 00 rm 618 flash file download.
