After reading the terrible reviews--some written by folks seeming to want this program to sing and dance as well as type for them--and the glowing ones--some written by folks who come across as Nuance employees--I really wasn't sure what to expect from this release of Dragon. But, having now used it for about a month, I have no real complaints with its performance so far. Of course it doesn't get all of my words, not even with lots and lots training. But I didn't expect it to do so; it gets most of them, and it's far more than I'd frankly have expected. And, no, the voice controls aren't terribly intuitive. But, what can you expect? I'd say they work pretty well. For me, though, I'm not interested in getting 100% accuracy. I just need the roughest first steps of interview transcriptions, without even so much as punctuation. For that, I just hit play on my recordings and speak what I hear, pausing pretty much only at natural breaks in the recording. I'd say it gets about 70-80% of what I say right on the first pass, though I've not done the math to be sure. I can then easily go back through and do manual cleanup and not feel the slightest bit like I was ripped off. I work in Native American linguistics, so most tribal names and technical terms fly right over its proverbial little head, but one can add those easily enough. So, despite its drawbacks, this program works very well for my needs and turns a very tedious and very time consuming job that makes my hands hurt into merely a boring job that makes my throat hurt. Worth its weight in some semi-precious metal for that alone, I'd say. I will, however, say that it is something of a resource hog. I certainly wouldn't run it on a machine that didn't have several gigabytes of memory. And do go through your startup files later and disengage all the crap that it thinks it needs when your system boots up. Manual starts of the application work just fine.
